Sketchbooks/Visual Journals
Use images and/or words to plan, imagine, practice, sketch, record, doodle, organize, explore, experiment, etc.
Sketchbooks can be used as part of a lesson (e.g. planning or practicing), for designated drawing time, and/or independently (when students finish early, indoor recess...)

Art Portfolios
Students learn to safely organize their artwork, storing it in large art portfolios - works like a large filing system. Use thick paper, such as Bristol Board or boxboard, folded in half and labelled with students' names so you identify them quickly. Digital photos of 3D, collaborative work and/or temporary works can be stored here as well. I liked to send the portfolios home at the end of each term; students could carefully transport home, share and discuss their work with families, then return the empty portfolio to school the next day, ready for another term of art.
